Two songs come to mind when I think of the amazing TY Bello. Greenland and The Future.
I know that my renewed love for Nigeria was birthed the first time I listened to TY Bello’s ‘Green land’.
Already a lover of her unique voice when she was still a member of Kush, where they had this popular song, “Let’s live together” (a song I can still sing word for word, ad lib for ad lib!! I mean, Kush used to be the coolest group in Nigeria back in the days), imagine my excitement when I knew she was back to stay.
‘Green land’ renewed hope for many Nigerians especially with the words “The land is green”.
‘The Future’ is another song that makes TY one of my heroes. It made me know that I have a part to play in the future of Nigeria and that there’s no better time to start than now.
On her webpage, she relates the story behind the song:
“I had committed to writing a jubilee song for Nigeria. I was moved to hone in on my message on December 31, 2010 when we were shocked by the Abuja bombings. In my view, the bombings are a metaphor of the hopelessness and impending tragedy that may lie ahead if we do not become more engaged in building the country we desire. I realize that the crisis in the nation is beyond the political. We each need to personalize Project Nigeria and take a stand for Nigeria NOW. And so, the first lines of the song are about just how important we are as a generation at this time in our history.”
TY is also a wife, mother, Photographer with extraordinary style, class and clientele… song writer. . .
How is she able to juggle all these? She’s Nigerian. 😀
